Often vacancies in a community cause many to wonder or have questions on Aleutian Housing Authority’s (AHA) process in resident selection for these units. In the past, unit selection was based on the simple first come, first served procedure.

However, through the years it has been determined that AHA needed to give priorities to families living in substandard conditions, homelessness, disabilities, families with children, elders, etc. Many of these same priorities are also now mandated by the HUD. As a result, the AHA Board of Commissioners adopted a uniform point system known as the Selection Rating Points as follows:
5 Points = 55 years and older
1 Points = Regional Member
3 Points = Two-Party (Adults)
5 Points = Overcrowding
4 Points = Resident of one or more years
5 Points = Disabled
5 Points = Currently living in Sand Point

The applicant points are totaled and the one with the highest amount of points is awarded the unit. This Selection Rating system helps to ensure that families with the most dire need receive precedence and is a great service tool. In the case where there is a tie, AHA uses the date and time the application was received as the deciding factor for the family selection. AHA follows up the final applicant selection with requesting a Tribal concurrence, allowing for declaration of any inaccuracies that may have occurred prior to final offering.

AHA encourages any interested families to submit applications regardless of unit availability and to keep this current annually. These applications also help in determining housing needs in communities, playing a bigger role in future community development.
